It is almost 23 April a very important day for Scouting Worldwide....
St. George's Day is celebrated on the 23rd of April.
Saint George is the Patron Saint of England and also the Patron Saint of all Scouts around the world. His flag is the red horizontal cross on a white background and his emblem is a knight slaying a dragon.
In 'Scouting for Boys', Baden-Powell referred to the Knights of the Round Table in the Arthurian Legend and to St. George who was their Patron Saint.
see also; 'Scouting for Boys, Camp Fire Yarn 20'.
On St. George's Day scouts remind themselves of their Promise and Scout Law.
Not that a Scout ever forgets either but, on St. George's Day, he makes a special point of thinking about them. Remember this when April 23 comes round again.
So, the Sunday nearest to St. George's Day has become an annual occasion for Scouts to hold ceremonies when they reaffirm their Promise and acknowledge the Scout Law in a national act of dedication.
Why St. George?
Why did Baden Powell choose St. George to be the Patron Saint of Scouting?
Baden Powell choose St. George to be the movements Patron Saint because of the qualities of the legendary Roman soldier; qualities that reflect good Scouting...
- Responsibility
- Truthfulness
- Devotion to duty
- A brave heart
- A noble spirit
- Dedication to helping others
BP wrote in Scouting for Boys about St.George;
"When he was faced by a difficulty or danger, however great it appeared, even in the shape of a dragon - he did not avoid it or fear it but went at it with all the power he could...
That is exactly the way a Scout should face a difficulty or danger no matter how great or how terrifying it may appear. He should go at it boldly and confidently, using every power that he can to try and overcome it, and the probability is that he will succeed.
St. George was typical of what a Scout should be.
Therefore all Scouts should know his story, and the legend of St. George slaying the Dragon.
Guiding
In the very beginning of the Scouting movement in Great Britain as in many other countries girl guides were member of the boys organisation. But soon the Girl Guides Association was founded, and girl guides registrated by the scouts Association were moved, -sometimes under protest- to this new organisation.
Althrough the WAGGGS -The World Association of Girl Guides and Girls Scouts- only was founded in 1928, the lady's already had decided in 1922 to declare the 22nd Februari, the day of Lord BP's and Lady BP's birthday as a day for celebrating and to renew their scout promise.
This day was called Thinking Day.
Even after that the girl guides and girl scouts still kept celebrating St. George day too.
In many countries St.George Day is still celebrated, so for example in England scouts meet at Winsor Castle in the famous St. George Chapel where the Queen (once a girl guide herself) will inspect the scouts.
The red tulip
The red tulip is the symbol for the drops of blood St. George lost on his way back home after the fight with the dragon. According the legend were red flowers blooming on the very spots where these blood drops fell onto the ground.
In the Netherlands a red tulip is used. The red tulip is also the symbol for the victory of the "Good" over the "Evil".
The scouts in the Netherlands are throwing these red tulips into the fire after renewing their scout promise. By throwing these tulips into the fire they hope to encounter only the Good.

Legend of St. George slaying the dragon
St. George traveled for many months by land and sea until he came to Libya.
Here he met a poor hermit who told him that everyone in that land was in great distress, for a dragon had long ravaged the country.
Every day, said the old man, he demands the sacrifice of a two sheep, but when the people ran out of sheep, the dragon demanded every day two children.
A lottery system was set up by the villigers to randomly pick the dragon's victims.
Many children had already been sacrificed and that days lottery picked the kings daughter to be offered and unless we can find a knight who can slay the dragon she will be sacrificed tomorrow. The king will give his daughter in marriage to the champion who overcomes this terrible monster.
When St. George heard this story, he was determined to try and save the princess, so he rested that night in the hermit's hut, and at daybreak set out to the valley where the dragon lived.
When he drew near he saw a little procession of women, headed by a beautiful girl dressed in pure Arabian silk. The princess Sabra was being led by her attendants to the place of death.
The knight spurred his horse and overtook the ladies. He comforted them with brave words and persuaded the princess to return to the palace. Then he entered the valley.
As soon as the dragon saw him it rushed from its cave, roaring with a sound louder than thunder. Its head was immense and its tail fifty feet long. But St. George was not afraid.
He struck the monster with his spear, hoping he would wound it.
The dragon's scales were so hard that the spear broke into a thousand pieces and St. George fell from his horse.
Fortunately he rolled under and enchanted orange tree against which not poison could prevail, so that the venomous dragon was unable to hurt him. Within a few minutes he had recovered his strength and was able to fight again.
He smote the beast with his sword but the dragon poured poison on him and his armour split in two.
Once more he refreshed himself from the orange tree and then, with his sword in his hand, he rushed at the dragon and pierced it under the wing where there were no scales, so that it fell dead at his feet.
